This month in November we had the Veterans 5K. We helped a lot before and during the race. A couple days before we packed the swag bags that each runner got. Kids in the 5th grade also drew designs for the T-shirts and they were hoping to win, but our class's very own Abby Wigger won! Everyone's designs were amazing. 5th graders advertised before and after school during carpool to get more runners to sign up for the race. To raise more money for Continue Mission, we gave everyone in the entire school pledge forms. We 5th graders made posters and presentations to teach other students in the school how to collect pledge money. On the day of the race, the 5th graders helped with passing out swag bags, help finding peoples chips and bibs, and a lot more. We give all our thanks and gratitude for the parents and 5th graders that helped with the veterans 5K. It was a huge success!
Hello everyone! This month for our Service Learning, we watched a video of teachers and high-schoolers being asked the same questions the people that want to be citizens in the US get asked and most kids had no idea. One teacher taught US Government and even she got a question wrong! We talked about how this relates to our theme for Service Learning in 5th grade: Patriotism. That day we went to this website called Padlet and posted ideas we had about Service Learning or thoughts about the video. When we heard the questions on the video, me and my classmates knew some of the answers. Here is the Padlet we made about ideas and thoughts about Service Learning and Patriotism. What did you guys think of the video? What do you think about our theme of Patriotism? Last week, our grade went to the library to present our check to Continue Mission of all the money we raised from the Veterans' 5K in November. They help veterans who need money and food. Eight 5th graders said a little speech and presented the check. The money we raised from the Veterans' 5K was $5,291.36. Way to go, guys! On Veterans' Day, we had a veteran come visit our class. His name was Mr. Cutler. We asked him questions and he told us about the military and the Korean War. We made him a book of poems and illustrations thanking him for his service. For our veterans, we also had our 5K run! The fastest people got prizes. There was also a bouncy house! After you ran, you could also get awesome swag bags. The race was a big success. What did you think about Mr. Cutler visiting our class and the 5K race?
This year our grade is helping to do a Veteran's 5K run. We are doing this to raise money for Continue Mission, a local organization that helps veterans. The best part is anyone come run, walk, or wheel! 5$ per runner, 25$ per family, and veterans run for free. Sign up online today! If you are a student, don't forget you can get pledge money by asking your family, friends, and neighbors to donate money to the cause. Pledge money is due on November 4th. The 5K is at Wasatch Peak Academy, 414 North Cutler Drive in Salt Lake City. It is on Saturday, November 12th at 9:00 AM. Come and run the race to help us serve our veterans. In class we worked on creating posters advertising the 5K and put them around the school. Some kids also made some videos to get people excited for the 5K! Veterans ran for us, now we can run for them! Our service learning project is about collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House where people can stay if they have a family member at Primary Children's Hospital! We got into groups and did presentations to the 3rd graders and Kindergarten. It was a lot of fun and a big success! All of the kids are super competitive and said that they are going to win, but we as the fifth grade don't believe that! The prize is a pizza and soda pop party, so if you want the party, you should start collecting! This year our 5th grade classes are collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald house. They are the top part of the soda can and are the most valuable part. We are trying to get the whole school to start collecting them. Our class is presenting to 3rd grade and kindergarten to inspire them and tell them all about it. We are very excited to go the extra mile and help each other out. We hope that you can help us too!
